TikTok Grants The Community Power to Reduce AI-Generated Content in Timelines

Users will soon have a fresh option that allows them to cut down on the amount of AI-created media appearing in their timelines. This move comes as the platform announced that it currently hosts over 1 bn AI videos.

Pilot Phase and Launch

The update is being tested over the next few weeks before a widespread rollout. This shift aligns with a surge in AI-generated material, driven by new video-generation tools.

The Broader AI Trend

Studies have shown that approximately one in 10 of the most rapidly expanding content creators on a competing service primarily display clips produced artificially. A large amount of this content is deemed “AI slop”, a label for poor-quality, mass-produced content that is frequently nonsensical or dreamlike.

“We know from our community that many people enjoy content created using AI tools, ranging from AI artwork to science explainers, and we aim to provide users the power to increase or decrease of that, based on their own preferences,” stated a company executive.

AI on the Platform

The platform announced that there are currently 1.3 billion videos on its service tagged as made with AI. In total, more than 100 mn media items are uploaded to the service each day, making AI content a minor part of its overall inventory.

How to Adjust Settings

Viewers will be capable of reduce or increase the volume of artificial media they view by opening the “manage topic” option in the app and choosing “AI-generated content”. Additional categories that currently be modified under the tool cover news, fashion, cosmetics, and movement.

Content Labeling and Policies

The platform’s guidelines mandate creators to label lifelike artificially created content, and it prohibits malicious fake videos of public figures or critical incidents. Any realistic AI-generated clip that is unmarked can be deleted under its user guidelines.

Furthermore, the service will now attach an AI-generated tag to content created with its proprietary AI systems, or detected by an collaborative effort for identifying artificial media. This step is intended to stop users from seeking to evade the disclosure requirement.

Educational Initiatives

The platform is furthermore introducing a $2m awareness program for professionals and organizations to produce educational content about responsible artificial intelligence. This program will benefit educational bodies dedicated to teaching coding and technology.

Platform Protection

TikTok has defended its content review process, during controversy over plans to cut jobs for numerous review team members in the United Kingdom. TikTok is planning to reduce a significant number of roles in its user protection team in its British office, with trade unions and online safety experts expressing worry that humans are being replaced by machine-led review.

A company official stated that people-led review would remain essential, but automated tools can protect employees by eliminating the most harmful content prior to it gets reviewed by staff. TikTok stated a notable drop in disturbing and violent content handled by content reviewers over the past year due to intervention by its AI tools.

“We think that it’s essential to balance staff and AI to ensure user safety,” the executive stated. “We’ll have humans as involved in the system, but we also think it’s very important to minimize viewing of unsafe media as rapidly, which is the area in which a lot of the machine support is proving valuable work at speed.”
